In our tutoring service Plantation Florida we work with many tools to get the child to read, write, and comprehend complex text/vocabulary. There are a plethora of pictures here showing evidence of the fantastic multisensory, hands on lessons we use in the Reading Room. Notice that no worksheets are present as we believe students learn best by doing! Besides our multisensory lessons we also have taught in the online format, hosted a Literacy Fest and have a homeschool component.
Multisensory Lessons
We use many exercises and tools to get the student to love literacy. One of the great exercises that we do, is having the students practice spelling by writing words in sand or rice which helps them not only learn how to spell words, but how to recognize them quickly so when they see them in a book, magazine, article or on the white board at school, they become more familiar to the child and the child will be able to increase their sight word knowledge. Plus feeling the sand or rice has a calming effect on the students. We have several shades of sand with pink, white, orange and even blue. Believe it or not, kids say it is one of their favorite activities because of the color and feel of the sand. We also use magnetic letters to have the students practice reading and spelling. The letters familiarize the students with the shape each letter has and how to put them together to make words, and then eventually sentences. This will positively impact their vocabulary and grammar skills. Our tutoring service Plantation Florida builds the child’s confidence in learning to read quicker and recognize how to put sentences together. Getting even more creative, we use Play-Doh to practice phonics patterns. For example we have used Play-Doh to make the closed syllable, short e words: bet, let and set. This multisensory approach keeps the child engaged while learning new material. It is inspiring to see the child who is struggling in school, pick up something as simple as Play-Doh to learn how to put letters together to form words. Our students thrive using these unconventional approaches in our tutoring service Plantation Florida.
We also make books with our students. Students have made A-Z books, fiction books, and informational texts. The children that work on these books have a lot of fun with them, and it helps to build their self esteem along the way. Coming away with more confidence, they now can show their teacher and classmates how much more fun school can be once they find a few strategies to help them learn and understand at an accelerated pace. It’s not only fulfilling to them but also to their parents who weren’t sure what to do. Parents can now feel confident that their children are picking up learning faster than they had ever done before. It is extremely fulfilling for the entire family! After each lesson the student shares what they learned with their parents and the strategies they used to learn the information. This allows families to practice what was learned at home by using the same strategy used during the tutoring session. We also like to use games and sorting activities in our lessons. We have matching games on colorful folders and several board games that we have transformed into phonics games. We are famous for having open and closed sorting activities to get students to identify similarities and differences among words and phonics sounds. Yet, we don’t only sort words but also use sorting to find matches to inference types, context clue types, and text feature types. In writing we share the pen with the student by doing I do, we do, and you do writing activities. To build memory, we have the student count circles to match the number of words we dictate to them in a sentence before they write the sentence. In essay formation, we teach students how to manage their ideas by using graphic organizers before they write an actual essay. Our tutoring service Plantation Florida utilizes some really great strategies to make the child a literacy superstar.
Online Lessons
In addition to our in-person tutoring service Plantation Florida lessons we are able to do online lessons and still get amazing results. As seen in the video and screen on shot on this page, we use power points, screen share, and the digital whiteboard to get the students involved in these lessons. We have presented structured literacy lessons online with students making two grade level jumps after only six months worth of lessons. We have also done group sessions and math sessions online. This proves that we can teach the same content while working with the student anywhere in the world.
Literacy Fest
We hosted a Literacy Fests where parents and grandparents were invited to an evening of food, fun, and book sharing. Prior to the Literacy Fest, students worked with their tutor on constructing a book on a topic that interested them. These books were both written, illustrated, and bound by the students. At the Literacy Fest, students read their books aloud to the audience while observers munched on snacks and drank smoothies. Students also showed their parents one of their favorite lessons we taught them. At the end of the evening the President of the Florida Dyslexia Association gave a presentation to the parents on how to help children with dyslexia. It was a memorable evening and another example of how our tutoring service Plantation Florida stands out among the rest.
Homeschool
We bring our unique techniques to the homeschool community as well. We have done individualized and group lessons but take them a step further with intriguing field trips. When students were studying the Native American tribes in Florida, we took them on a field trip to some Indian excavation sites in Broward County. Then for our earth science students we visited the Frost Science Museum in Miami to see science come to life.
We believe that the world is our classroom and therefore we incorporate as much of real life lessons and activities to make the learning impactful.
