Services
Our flagship service
At The Reading Room, we provide the most effective and joyful tutoring service Plantation Florida has to offer. It’s geared for children (and even adults) who want to become confident, successful readers. We can teach anyone to read, from age 4 to 104 — with no failures.
Our flagship service is one-on-one and small group tutoring. Children typically gain significant growth in reading age and confidence, in just a few months through our remarkable program. The results are truly incredible, and that’s why we are the highest rated and most reviewed tutoring service Plantation Florida.
One-On-One Sessions
One of our most popular services is the one-on-one session. This is where a tutor will meet with a student for a one hour block of time. Tutors come prepared with individual lessons tailored to each student’s needs. These sessions have included such topics as structured literacy, reading, history, science, writing, comprehension, grammar, math, Spanish, and novel studies.
Group Sessions
Another popular tutoring service Plantation Florida offers is our group sessions. These are one hour weekly sessions capped at no more than five students in a group, yet generally it is two to three students. We cover some of the same topics as in our one-on-one sessions but peer interaction plays a part. Learning does not take place in a vacuum and socialization is important. Discussing topics and creating plans with a peer is powerful. Who doesn’t get a thrill out of competing against another peer in a Kahoot game? It is also important for students to see others who struggle in the same topics they have difficulty with (i.e., reading ) so that they do not feel like they are the only one, which is generally how they feel in a typical classroom. Some unique group sessions we have had are listed below:
Dyslexia Group Sessions
Two to three students participate in a structured literacy lesson on a skill they all need. The lesson is based on the University of Florida Literacy Institute’s Dyslexia program. There are 9 steps in the lesson:
- Visual Drill – Students view a card with a phonics pattern on it. Then the student will verbally recite the sound of the phonics pattern. If it is not known, students will be told the correct sound and asked to repeat it.
- Auditory Drill – The students write the sound they hear in sand. This usually involves the students writing multiple ways to represent one sound. Phonics patterns missed in the visual drill will be presented here as well.
- Blending Drill – Students move magnetic letters to make specific words. These words usually involve a phonics pattern the student is having difficulty mastering. For example, the words may be all igh words such as high, nigh, night, might, fight, sight, light, lighted, and lightheaded. Nonsense and real words will be used in this part of the lesson to see if the students can recognize the phonic pattern in words they have never seen before.
- Review – Material learned in the previous lesson will be reviewed here.
- Regular Words – Students will write phonetically regular spelled words here. They use pound and sound to uncover how to spell these words.
- Heart Words – Students will memorize words that are not regularly spelled.
- Sentences – Students will write sentences that the teachers dictates.
- New Lesson – A new lesson will be presented that both students need.
- Reading – Students will read a short story that contains the phonics pattern that was introduced in the new lesson. Comprehension and fluency will also be addressed here with the passage.
HSPT Camp During the Summer
We provide a two week camp for four hour sessions a day geared at students preparing for the High School Placement Test (HSPT). This camp was unique because we incorporated brain breaks within the schedule. We did an hour of reading, then participated in a physical activity for an hour (i.e, swimming, playing street hockey, playing board games, playing water balloons, going for a walk, etc), followed by a lunch break, and then ended with an hour of math instruction. Weekly HSPT exams were given during the camp to measure progress and see what areas needed more instruction/help.
SAT Group Sessions
Our tutoring service Plantation Florida will be adding this group session after the success we had with our HSPT Camp. This will be three hour in person sessions with a brain break in between the math and reading lessons. SAT exams will be given during some of the sessions to measure progress and to see what areas need more focus. This will get outstanding results as there aren’t many in person SAT group sessions and of those, none offer a physical component in the middle of each session.
A FUN EXPERIENCE!
The Reading Room is unique.
We know kids who hate reading don’t want to come and do the thing they hate most in the world for an hour each week! The key to our success is that we tap into motivation.
Genius, isn’t it! NO WONDER WE ARE THE HIGHEST RATED AND MOST SUCCESSFUL TUTORING SERVICE PLANTATION FLORIDA OR SOUTH FLORIDA HAS SEEN!!!
At our first meeting, we ask our students what their favorite snack or small toy is and then we bring it for all ensuing sessions. Our treasure box is filled with necklaces, smelly stickers, bookmarks, fidgets, slime containers, etc. Smiles and encouraging words go a long way too. Additionally, we make academic goals with our students and then we track their progress together so they can see how well they are doing. Who wouldn’t want to be in a place where they make large reading gains, get positive feedback, and eat a snack while doing so? It is a positive and fun atmosphere, so students look forward to their lessons. We try anything to help the child enjoy the experience and keep coming. After a few sessions, they’re hooked. Most of them. There are some tough nuts out there! We try everything!! The amazing thing is struggling readers are even recommending the Reading Room to their friends saying, “you will love it.” This is the best referral we can get, from student to student.
